Gladiators v Brummies – Jubilee League (Southern) Preview

The Plymouth Westcolour Gladiators make a welcome return to action, after SIX long weeks since their last Home Championship Fixture, when they face the Birmingham Brummies in Championship Jubilee League (Southern) action at The Coliseum on Tuesday evening, Tapes Up 7.00pm

The Westcolour Gladiators have seen scheduled League Matches against Birmingham and Glasgow fall foul of very wet weather and the scheduled fixture against Newcastle cancelled at very short notice following their decision to leave Speedway in 2022 due to mounting financial problems.

The Westcolour Gladiators have produced some excellent away performances at Leicester, Birmingham, Poole and Oxford in the meantime, despite a lengthening injury list and Club Management are hoping that supporters will turn out in large numbers in the coming weeks for some exciting Jubilee League (Southern) action and also to help the Club re-build their finances after a long spell without the vital ticketing income that are the life-blood of any Speedway Club.

Club Director and Promoter Mark Phillips explained:

“The Championship Jubilee League (Southern) is a fantastic new addition to the Championship Speedway calendar with 3 Regional Groups and the winner of each going to a 3 Team Final at Sheffield in early September.

It is a competition that should very much play to our strengths and consistency and we remain the only club in the Championship to score 40 points or more in every League Fixture. Make no mistake, this is a competition that we have targeted and want to win and we hope that our fans will turn out in large numbers to back us.

Our group consists of Birmingham, Oxford and Poole and we very much look forward to welcoming fans of those clubs and Speedway fans from all over the UK who may be holidaying in Devon and Cornwall and Somerset to join us now that the peak holiday season is upon us.

We’ve a FULL programme of Speedway every Tuesday at 7pm now throughout the Summer at Championship and NDL level and with some glorious weather forecast this week we hope to have a bumper crowd at The Coliseum every Tuesday from now on to boost us in our quest for silverware and to help us cover the costs of an inordinate amount of away fixtures since our last Championship Match right at the end of May”

The Westcolour Gladiators call up Kyle Howarth as Guest for the injured Edward Kennett and await a fitness update from Michael Palm-Toft closer to start time. They will line up with the in-form Ben Barker at No 1, Alfie Bowtell; Kyle Howart (Guest), Michael Palm-Toft (R/R will operate if Michael is not ready in time), Hans Anderson; Harry McGurk and Ben Morley.

The Brummies will be formidable opposition despite bringing in some Guests for injured or absent riders and have a very exciting and cosmopolitan look about their team.

Ulrich Ostergaard comes in as Guest for the injured Josh Auty and is joined by the always combative Stefan Neilsen, the colourful and crowd pleasing Paco Castagna replaces the unavailable Claus Vissing, Ashey Morris captains the side at 4, with Justin Sedgeman at number 5, and with James Shanes on World Long-Track duty the Brummies bring in the very much in demand former Gladiator Jason Edwards at no 6 with young Australian prospect James Pearson at Number 7.

The Westcolour Gladiators will be seeking to get off to a flying start before travelling up the M5 to Birmingham on Wednesday night and then have Home Fixtures against Poole Pirates (19th) and Oxford Cheetahs (26th) in the Summer Cup over the next few weeks.
