Plymouth’s returnees could not stop Edinburgh surge at Armadale

Plymouth’s first meeting with Danny King and Ben Barker back in the line-up ended in defeat at Armadale, as Edinburgh built a decisive lead through the middle of the contest and kept control to the end.

The Gladiators arrived needing a response after the 47-43 reverse in the home meeting earlier in the season, but they were forced onto the back foot early. A level opening heat was followed by a run of home advantages for the Monarchs, and although Plymouth kept themselves in touch at times, the meeting began to move away from them during a damaging spell before the interval.

Heat 5 was a key moment. King came down after going in too deep at the first bend and was excluded from the rerun, handing Edinburgh a 5-1 when the Gladiators had been looking to stay level. From there, the home side built a cushion with another maximum in heat 7 and a further 5-1 in heat 8, stretching the lead and putting Plymouth into damage limitation mode.

To their credit, the Gladiators did not fold. King responded well after his early setback, scoring 11 from his rides, while Scott Nicholls produced another strong night with 12 and Ben Barker added six on his return. There were also signs of resistance in the second half of the meeting, with Plymouth taking a maximum in heat 9 and again going close in heat 13 before Edinburgh held firm.

That was ultimately the story of the night. Plymouth had enough in patches to show they can compete with the sides around them in the Championship table, but the meeting was decided by Edinburgh’s stronger spell across heats 5 to 8 and the home side’s ability to protect the advantage once it had been established.

For Plymouth, the return of King and Barker was still an important development, particularly with a busy weekend ahead. The challenge now is to turn those added options into points as the three-meeting run continues, starting with the next test on the road.
