Plymouth produced their most significant home victory of the Cab Direct Championship season so far, edging past Poole 47-43 to hand the Pirates their first league defeat of the campaign.
It was a meeting that swung back and forth for much of the evening, but the Gladiators found the key response when it mattered. After Poole had twice hauled themselves level, Plymouth regained control through the middle heats and then held their nerve under pressure to see the contest through in the closing stages.
Danny King was at the heart of it all. His 12+1 made him the meeting’s top scorer and, unsurprisingly, earned him the fans’ rider of the night accolade. Scott Nicholls also turned in an influential 10+1, while Ben Barker added 9+1 and Joe Thompson chipped in with 6. In a meeting decided by fine margins, that strength from the top and middle of the order made the difference.
Poole were dangerous throughout and had enough firepower to keep Plymouth honest. Richard Lawson scored 11, Lewis Kerr added 10 and Cooper Rushen contributed 4+2, while William Cairns also provided useful support. The Pirates were always in the contest, but they could not find the decisive heat advantage when the meeting tightened up.
The early stages were evenly poised. Poole took a 2-4 from Heat 1 when Cairns gated well, and although Plymouth responded with steady scoring, the visitors stayed in touch. Heat 6 was a turning point, with Thompson and Nicholls combining for a 5-1 after Luke Harrison came down and was excluded from the re-run. That brought the home side level at 18-18 and gave the crowd fresh belief.
From there, Plymouth began to build real momentum. Heat 9 saw Barker and Klima record another 5-1 after Harrison retired on the start line, and although Poole kept answering back, the Gladiators were able to stay just in front through a run of shared heats.
The visitors then produced their own big response in Heat 12, when Kerr and Newman split either side of Klima to land a 1-5 and level the scores at 36-36. That was the moment the meeting threatened to swing Poole’s way, but Plymouth answered well. King again delivered in Heat 13, with Nicholls backing him up for a 4-2, before Heat 14 brought another important home advantage after Newman was excluded for breaking the tapes and Barker helped secure a 4-2 in the re-run.
That left Heat 15 to settle matters, and Plymouth handled it exactly as they needed to. Lawson gated for Poole, but Nicholls and King settled for second and third behind him, sharing the race and confirming a 47-43 win. It was not dramatic, but it was controlled, and after a meeting full of momentum shifts, control mattered.
There were also positive signs in the lower order, with Anze Grmek taking 5 from his five outings and Daniel Klima collecting 5+2 despite being asked to race in some tricky situations. Ben Whalley did not score on the night, but the overall balance of the team was enough to get the job done.
For Plymouth, the result means more than just two league points. Beating Poole for the first time this season gives the Gladiators a real lift and shows they can match one of the Championship’s leading sides over 15 heats. It was a proper battle, and one the home side earned through resilience and composure.
