Ever Wondered What It Feels Like?
Saturday 18th July

For thousands of supporters, speedway is a sport watched from the grandstands. The smell of methanol, the roar of the engines and the thrill of four riders charging into the first bend are all part of the experience.

But what if you could swap the terraces for the track?

Regular visitors to the Plymouth Coliseum, My First Skid, are giving fans and complete newcomers the opportunity to do exactly that.

Whether you've never ridden a motorcycle before or you're an experienced rider looking to develop your speedway skills, My First Skid has built a reputation for offering a welcoming, friendly and professional introduction to one of the world's most exhilarating motorsports.

Born from the hugely successful Two Fat Submariners speedway schools, My First Skid was originally created to support the charity fundraising efforts of Steve Mills and Barry Bishop. The concept proved so popular that it quickly took on a life of its own, with demand ensuring the schools continued long after the charity year had ended.

Today, the aim remains simple: help more people experience the unique thrill of riding a speedway bike.

The schools are open to almost anyone who can balance on two wheels. From absolute beginners to riders with ambitions of improving their race craft, every session is tailored to help participants progress at their own pace in a safe, supportive environment.

One of the biggest attractions is that there's no need to arrive with a van full of equipment. My First Skid provides everything you'll need, including protective clothing and a fleet of bikes ranging from 90cc machines right through to the iconic 500cc speedway bikes ridden by the professionals.

For riders who already own their own equipment, academy sessions offer more advanced coaching, increased track time and the chance to develop both riding technique and technical knowledge, with engine and setup workshops planned as the programme continues to grow.

Sessions begin with a rider briefing at 11.30am before the action gets underway from midday through until 4pm, giving participants plenty of opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills and experience the incredible feeling of sliding a speedway bike around the famous Plymouth Coliseum.

If you've ever sat in the grandstand and wondered, "Could I do that?" then perhaps now is the perfect time to find out.
