Barker leads Gladiators to hard-earned home win over Workington
Plymouth Gladiators produced a disciplined response at the Colosseum to beat Workington Comets 49-41 in the Cab Direct Championship, and the scoreline only tells part of the story. The visitors fought back into contention after a bright Plymouth start, but the Gladiators finished the meeting the stronger side and closed it out with a decisive burst in the final races.

That was the real difference. Plymouth were sharp early on, with Joe Thompson leading the way in Heat 1 before the home side built a useful advantage through the opening stages. Ben Barker and Daniel Kilma helped set the tone with key heat wins, while Danny King also chipped in as the Gladiators established control.

Workington were never allowed to settle, but they did find a way back into the contest. Troy Batchelor was outstanding for the visitors and Vinnie Foord provided support, while the Comets also took advantage of a few untidy moments in the middle of the meeting to cut into Plymouth’s lead. At one stage, the pressure was building and the home side needed a response.

They found it. Heat 13 proved pivotal, with Thompson and King combining for a 5-1 that pushed Plymouth back into a stronger position. That set up the final stages nicely, and although Workington took Heat 15, the Gladiators had already done enough to make sure the meeting stayed in their hands.

Barker was the standout performer for Plymouth, scoring 14+1 and underlining why he was named fans’ rider of the night. Thompson also delivered a major contribution with 13+2, while Kilma added 9+2 and King chipped in with 8+1. It was a balanced team effort, and that mattered against a Workington side with plenty of scoring power of their own.

There was also a notable return to form in the way Plymouth finished the job. They had to absorb pressure, stay composed and keep finding points across the order. That is exactly the sort of response Garry May will have wanted, especially after praising the way the team spoke and then backed that up on track.

May’s verdict was clear enough afterwards: “Absolutely fantastic! The team spoke and we did everything right.” He also looked ahead to the next run of meetings, with Glasgow and Berwick to come, and said he would be happy to take 35 points at Poole.

For Plymouth, the significance of this win is straightforward. It keeps momentum moving in the right direction and shows that the Gladiators can still control a meeting even when the visitors land a few blows. There is plenty still to play for, but this was another reminder that Plymouth are capable of handling the pressure when it matters.

Attention now turns to the next chapter, and the Gladiators will want to carry this kind of discipline and scoring balance into the challenges ahead.
