Berwick took a firm grip on the knockout final with a 58-32 first-leg victory, but Plymouth now have the return meeting at the Coliseum to set the record straight. The scoreline was heavy, yet the tie remains to be completed, and that is where the Gladiators must now turn their attention.
The evening began badly for Plymouth when Berwick hit a 5-1 in the opening heat, and the home side never really let go of that early momentum. The Bandits built steadily through the middle stages, stringing together enough heat advantages to keep stretching the gap, while Plymouth struggled to find the race wins needed to stay in touch.
Ben Barker was the pick of the Gladiators with 11, while Joe Thompson added 6+1 and Scott Nicholls contributed 6 before retiring from his final two rides. Danny King, Daniel Klima, Anze Grmek and Ben Whalley all had to work hard for their points, but Plymouth could not put enough riders together at the same time to turn individual scores into pressure on the home side.
Berwick, by contrast, were more consistent across the board. Reid Battye impressed with 15, Nick Morris added 13+2 and Peter Kildemand collected 11+1, while Victor Palovaara also chipped in with 9+2. That strength in depth told the story of the meeting, especially once the Bandits had moved into a clear lead early on.
For Plymouth, the key now is not to dwell on the first-leg margin but to use the home meeting to respond properly. The Gladiators have already shown this season that they can put together a strong performance against Berwick, having beaten the Bandits 55-35 at home in July, and that earlier result offers a reminder of what is possible when they gate well and build pressure heat by heat.
There is no escaping the fact that the return leg will require a much better night all round, but the task is straightforward enough: start well, keep the scores close, and give the home support something to rally behind. The final is not settled yet.
Attention now turns to Plymouth and the chance to make the second leg count. The Gladiators will need a far more complete performance, but with home advantage still to come, there is at least an opportunity to answer back and keep the contest alive right to the very last heat.
