There are some days in speedway that stick with you and yesterday at the Plymouth Coliseum was certainly one of them.
Despite the rain trying its best to interfere, spirits stayed high and the track stayed busy as My First Skid Speedway School, run by Barry Bishop with support from many volunteers, delivered another unforgettable experience. Riders of all levels took to the shale, proving that a bit of British weather is no match for passion and determination.
One of the standout moments of the day may well have been a piece of history in the making. Four women Viv Bath, Kacey Mounce, Karen Barnes, and Lucy Phillips all took to the track together, a fantastic and inspiring sight.
They weren’t alone either. Charlotte Brookes and Ella Fisher were also part of the day’s action, further underlining a simple but important message speedway really is a sport for everyone.

What is My First Skid?
For those new to the scene, My First Skid is all about giving people the chance to experience the thrill of speedway riding in a safe and supportive environment. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone looking to sharpen your skills, the school caters to all abilities.
Participants can learn the fundamentals of riding a speedway bike from body positioning and throttle control to mastering the art of the skid itself. For more experienced riders, it’s an opportunity to refine technique and build confidence on track.
One of the biggest advantages is accessibility. A full range of bikes and equipment is available to hire, meaning you don’t need your own gear to get started. It’s a fantastic way to try something new without a huge upfront commitment.
Looking Ahead
While dates are still to be officially confirmed, the next My First Skid sessions at Plymouth are likely to take place on either the 23rd or 30th of May. Additional sessions are also expected at the Isle of Wight on the 21st and 28th of May. These are currently to be confirmed, but they’re ones to keep an eye on.
